Industrial SEO Action Plan
Incorporating a strong SEO plan into the initial development of a website is paramount to the websites success. A website with a strong SEO foundation will perform well overtime without the need for extensive SEO “repairs”.
Accessible Content
- Choose your website platform so content is well organized, well accessible both for users and search engines.
- Design a layout that meets the latest standards in usability for search engines and users.
- Your new design should have a modern look with tools that users expect when visiting a website in your industry.
- Make it as easy as possible for your content to be shared by your visitors.
Incorporate video, audio and social media websites with your business properly. This means to use these tools when applicable. There is no need to have these tools if they don’t offer value to the user.
Keywords
- Perform thorough keyword research and decide on the keywords you will target to bring organic traffic. This should be done before website development begins, NOT after.
- Perform on-page optimization using those keywords.
Content
Content is king. Not only for SEO, but also for the visitor. Stuffing a page with too much text is a good way to turn users away. Keywords should occur 4-9% on a page. Trying to get all keywords on the home page will lead to too much text or ineffective keywords. This is where all the keyword research comes into play.
Links
Perform content interlinking using the keyword phrases you want to target
The rule here is that it 1) has to look natural 2) anchor text keywords need to match with title page of linked page. This one reason why SEO keyword analysis needs to be done before website development begins.
Directory Submission
Directories have less merit to the search engines as links from unique websites. The search engines are well aware of which websites are directories and which are not.
Blog Comment Submission
Commenting on blogs needs to have relative and insightful content or it will probably be marked as SPAM. Commenting “Great Post” is not going to generate any interest in you or your company.
The best way to attract incoming links is to offer content on your website that users find valuable.
Social Media
Get involved in communities sharing interest in your business.
Be an advisor, newsman, party friend and whatever it takes to make people trust your brand. It’s important to interact with others on social media platforms in a useful way and not come off as pushy or just post advertising information. It’s important that the person interacting in the social communities be an expert in that field. Others may have very specific questions that only an expert can handle.
Facebook is the leading tool for social interaction. I find it one of the best ways to create community around a product or company. A company Facebook page is easy to build and easily maintained.
Twitter is also very popular, but using a different format of allowing only 140 characters per post makes it hard to seem genuine. I find Twitter also requires more maintenance and has a much higher percentage of SPAM.
LinkedIn is marketed more for the business community. Linked in (like Facebook) offers many groups that you can become active in and establish yourself as an expert in your area.
Tracking
Any successful SEO program needs tracking to succeed. The traffic and quality of the traffic needs to be analyzed. It’s important that constant monitoring and adjusting is taking place. For a new website, I would recommend that the website remain somewhat static over the first 3 months. It often takes this long for a website to start to gain traction on the search engines. A good benchmark needs to be established to get a true indication of future performance.
